Choosing a featured image size for WordPress

WordPress generates several copies of each upload (thumbnail, medium, large and more) and your theme decides which one to show as the featured image. Upload at least as large as the biggest size your theme displays, and keep the important part of the picture near the centre so theme crops stay safe.

One image for the site, another for social

The best size for your blog layout is rarely the best size for sharing. Set your featured image for the page, and use a dedicated 1200×630 image as the Open Graph image in your SEO plugin so links look right everywhere.

Quick answers

What size should my Open Graph image be?

1200×630 pixels (about 1.91:1) is the standard. Anything at least 600×315 works, but larger images look sharper on high-density screens.

What is the ideal featured image size for a blog post?

1200×675 (16:9) works on most themes. If your theme uses a different ratio, match that so WordPress doesn't crop unexpectedly.

JPG, PNG or WebP?

JPG for photos and social cards, PNG for sharp text and transparency, WebP for smaller files on your own site. Social platforms are least consistent with WebP, so use JPG or PNG for OG images.
